Press Release: Family Resource Center Opens to Support Families in La Porte County

LA PORTE, IN – The Strengthening Indiana Families initiative, in partnership with Geminus, will celebrate the grand opening of the La Porte County Family Resource Center on Monday, August 7, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. The center, located at 1232 State Rd. 2, Suite C in La Porte, aims to enhance the well-being of parents and children by providing a wide range of comprehensive services and resources. 

La Porte Mayor Tom Dermody and other special guests will attend the ribbon cutting followed by refreshments and tours of the facility. The event is open to the community.  

“Geminus is proud to partner with Strengthening Indiana Families,” said Regional Care Group CEO Bill Trowbridge. Geminus is a member of the Regional Care Group. “This center will serve as a hub for community resource navigation, offering assistance in accessing vital resources.” 

In line with its mission to support parents and families, the Family Resource Center will offer various programs and services. These include, but are not limited to: 

• Susy’s Store: A small pantry that provides ready-to-make meals, promoting food security and nutrition, as well as hygiene products and baby needs. 
• Parent Café: A welcoming space where parents can openly discuss their parenting challenges and successes, fostering a supportive community. 
• Kids Korner: A fun space for children to play while parents receive resources. 
• Community Partners for Child Safety: An in-home visitation program that assists families by connecting them to resources and assistance.   
• Mental health counseling: Referrals to counseling and mental health services.   

The La Porte Family Resource Center is open three days a week to serve local families. The center’s operating hours are as follows: Tuesday, 11:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.; Wednesday, 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.; Thursday, 1:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. 

The Strengthening Indiana Families La Porte County Family Resource Center is part of the larger Strengthening Indiana Families project. This initiative is funded by a generous five-year Community Collaborations grant of $2.74 million from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Administration for Children and Families, Children’s Bureau. The grant supports the establishment of four family resource centers across Indiana, including the new center in La Porte County.
